The Mpumalanga Drakensberg Escarpment is blessed with no fewer than 8 waterfalls, all within two hours drive from Nelspruit, White River, Hazyview and the lodges situated in the southern Sabi Sand Reserve. The romantic names of these falls belie the natural beauty of these spectacular natural wonders. With names such as The Bridal Veil Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Lone Creek Falls and Mac Mac Falls ones imagination runs wild. Each waterfall has a story. Let your Drive The Big 5 experienced guide be your storyteller and host for a day filled with natural beauty and wonder. Please remember that the falls are at their most spectacular during our summer months, (October through April) our rainy season. However there is water flowing over the falls all year round and the pure beauty of the falls and their settings make this a year round destination.

Waterfall Tour

Waterfalls all over the world have captured the imagination of man since time immemorial and here in the Mpumalanga area of South Africa we are blessed with no fewer that 8 of these natural wonders. The working for Water Project together with the private land owners have spent millions of Rands clearing away “invader” species of plants in an endeavour to restore these beautiful waterfalls to the way in which God intended them to be.

The waterfall tour normally starts from the town of Sabie where there are no less than 4 waterfalls. Here we will visit the Sabie Falls, the Lone Creek Falls, the Horseshoe Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. From the town of Sabi we carry on to the Mac Mac Falls which was the scene of one of the first gold rushes in South Africa. How the name Mac Mac was derived is a story in itself, but we will leave that to your Dive The Big 5 guide to tell!

A short distance from Mac Mac are the “delicate” and seldom visited  Maria Shires Falls in the most beautiful of settings. The lonely graves, not far from the falls, add a touch of nostalgia to these falls.

On the way from the Maria Shire’s Falls we continue through the town of Graskop to view the Graskop Falls. For the adventurous you can take the “sling” across the gorge and earn yourself a Castle Lager for your bravery. A 20 minute drive from Graskop brings us to the 92 meter high Lisbon Falls and another 20 minutes drive to the slightly smaller but no less impressive 48 meter high Berlin Falls. The names of both these falls being derived from the town of origin of the first settlers where these falls are situated.

The Waterfall Tour is a perfect way to spend a day in the Mpumalanga Escarpment. Pick-up would be at 09h00 from your hotel, lodge or B&B with drop off at 17h00. Lunch, which would be for your own account, is usually at a restaurant in the misty town of Graskop or in Sabie.
